Manuscripts should be submitted as pdf files via e-mail; written in English, French, or German; and prepared in TEX or one of its variants (LATEX, AMS-TEX, or AMS-LATEX). It is also strongly suggested that authors use the following specifications in TEX: document class amsart (type size 11pt) (\documentclass[11pt]{amsart}); text height = 615pt; and text width = 360pt. Authors should make sure that the manuscript is in its final form and that all necessary corrections to the submitted file(s) have been made prior to submission.

AJMmanuscripts should adhere to the following general style points: an abstract should be included on the first page (heavy use of mathematical symbols and displayed formulas in abstracts is discouraged); the body of the manuscript should begin with an introduction stating the purpose of the article and summarizing the principal results; footnotes should not be used (other than on the first page to acknowledge financial support); any figures or other illustrations should be rendered in black-and-white or grayscale only; and bibliographic references should be listed alphabetically at the end of the article (the format for references can be found in current issues of theAmerican Journal; authors should consultMathematical Reviewsfor the standard abbreviations of journal names).

There are no page charges, but authors will be charged for the cost of excessive changes requested after an article has been typeset. Offprints ofAJMarticles may be ordered on-line at any time directly from the printer:

#### Peer Review Policy

By submitting a manuscript to theAmerican Journal of Mathematics (AJM), the author acknowledges that it is an original work and not being submitted elsewhere. Papers discovered to be in contravention of this requirement will be rejected immediately.

The editors of the Journal employ a two-stage blind reviewing process: multiple brief opinions (re: general suitability) are sought out first, followed by the solicitation of at least one full, detailed report from another referee.

The duration of the reviewing period depends upon the length and complexity of the paper, and the difficulty (or lack thereof) of finding suitable referees. The editors do their best to reach a final decision within 6-8 months of the original submission date.

Weak or amateurish papers which are clearly unsuitable for a top-level Mathematics journal (e.g., unsophisticated, incorrect, poorly written, not composed in TeX, lacking familiarity with current literature on the topic, etc.) are typically rejected within a day or two of submission; "borderline" papers may be under review for several months.

For a paper to be published in theAJM, it must evidence high levels of novelty and depth, and represent a significant advance in Mathematics which could potentially be of interest to the broadest possible readership.

A unanimously positive vote of all four members of the senior editorial board is required for publication. The editors are extremely selective, and will only vote to accept papers with multiple, very strong and enthusiastically positive recommendations from the referees.

Decisions concerning publication of manuscripts in theAJMrest solely with the Editors, and all decisions are final.
